When you and your friends get down these basics, the game becomes exceedingly more strategic and fun. You always want to be the finishing blow on someone who has just had their coffers emptied by other players' rent cards. When you have a good nest egg, rent cards become a sort of game of chicken. If there is ANY way your opponent can pull a victory (assuming no one leaves a monopoly out to be hit with Deal Breaker), immediately notify the other players and try to dismantle even just one piece of their move. These make you a target, and are versatile enough 3 of any combination of this at the end of the game can create a surprise victory. Hold back your forced deals, sly deals, and rainbow wild cards until necessary. Avoid playing pieces of them down without a good reason. IE it's often better to lose a 2M railroad than 4M cash when someone plays It's My Birthday.Ģ card sets are always dangerous. Don't be afraid to just hand it off as you would money. When you've been absolutely cleaned out, discarding the properties in your hand is sometimes better than letting someone take it from you.Ī full set of Railroads is really freaking hard to finish, and usually involve a wildcard that would be better used as the other color it is. Don't be overly afraid of discarding either. On your first turn, if you have no good way to build up money to protect yourself, just draw and end your turn, and you won't have discard. The bonus rent will rarely be worth losing everything. A good 2 color rent can bring you a pretty good nest egg pretty almost every time.Īs a caveat to the Deal Breaker notes above, drop those houses and hotels into your money pile unless you feel like you KNOW that you are going to use it well in the next turn or two. Never EVER turn any 2 color rent cards into money if playing with 4/5 players. Try to make sure your opponents don't leave themselves open to other opponents as well. When charging rent, remember to rearrange wildcards before you end your turn to avoid having any monopolies to Deal Break. Keep count of what's played.įull sets are immune to Forced Deals and Sly Deals, but Deal Breakers will just ruin you. Every player needs this information before the game starts because the advantage of knowing this is HUGE. There are 2 Deal Breakers, and 3 Just Say Nos in the game. It has a couple details that are more or less essential to playing the game correctly that might not be intuitive. To each their own :).Įdit: For those who haven't played this game a TON, here's some basic strategy for the game! It mostly applies to 4/5 players. Give it some loving r/boardgames! Or not. In my humble opinion, this game needs to at least be in the top 200 family games. If you love Monopoly Deal, add it to you owned list at the bottom of the page, go into your BGG collection and rate it. Non-gamers just gravitate towards the familiar theme, but stay because the game is simply fun to play.Ĭonsidering it is often available for as little as $4, I find it strange that Monopoly Deal only has 2k ratings on BGG. Although it is not the best game in my collection, it has probably seen the most plays. It absolutely bugs me that Monopoly Deal has not gotten as much visibility in the board game community as it deserves.
